Message 1: I am sorry it took so long for me to remember to send this official email to let you know that I want to sign the petition to decertify the TWU from representing us. I will do whatever I can to get the word out to those people that I know who also feel the same way. Vote NO
Message 2: Last year I signed an "interest card" for the Union. My understanding was that it was just to get information about the union. I am among the silent majority that voted against the union, but as far as the union pushers are concerned, I am on their side...I found it is better to pretend I am with them than face the wrath if they think I am against them. Here's my question: if I sign the petition, will the union proponents know who signed the list? And what about that interest card I signed last year? Does it matter that they still have it? Thanks for any info you can give me! Vote NO
Message 3: First off, this is not a company endorsed e-mail, I am only a dealer.
Instead of concentrating on what Steve Wynn has done to us let’s look for just a second to what he has done for us. He has offered most of us an opportunity to make more money dealing than we have before, that being said lets look at some of the other facts (or opinions).
He has told the floor people that if the union is voted down than the tips go back to the dealers and they get a sizeable raise from the casino. Did he promise us? No, he is bound by law not to. But knowing what he knows now about how we feel as a group about his tip pooling policy would he be stupid enough to go against his word on this? Would he risk sending pissed off dealers and supervisors to the front line a second time? That would be bad business and if nothing else he is not a bad business man. I think the ego is checked at the door for now…we won, IF, we don’t allow the union in. As far as the vendetta that everyone is speaking of and the mass firing that will take place if we don’t have this group of bus drivers to represent us, that to would be stupid business and legal or not, would throw him into a litigious quagmire that he would rather not have to explain to his shareholders.
So what leverage is a union going to give us? Lets look at our current situation.
1. Job Security - The Wynn does not fire people without cause, I’m sure we all know someone on our respective shifts that should be fired but has not. As far as progressive discipline, how far should they go? Do your job well and they will give you a place to work, seems fair to me. As far as the group team lead firing, we all had friends that lost their jobs then and they are nice people, but, they were not of the caliber that the highest paid floor people in the business . 2. Working Conditions - The only hostility I encountered has been from other dealers. Management has busted their butts trying to keep us happy. Some days I have to work full hours between 20 minutes breaks. I have had to work some overtime for special events but I was compensated for it. I get free meals ( they are average) covered parking for my car and an environment where I feel secure. I have to buy my own shoes but the rest of the uniform is provided and maintained for me. What more can the union get for me there? 3. Benefits - Insurance is comparable to other properties. Better than some and worse than others but companies are pulling farther and farther from insurance benefits because of the expense. 401k is pretty much industry standard on the match, are we going to get more (per dollar earned) than every other department in the hotel? Remember, we make up less than 10% of the staff of the Wynn. I’m sure that won’t happen.
In my opinion, If the union is voted in, Steve Wynn can offer what we currently have, or even a little less, and claim that, since we are among the highest paid in town and have above average working environment, that constitutes a good faith bargaining position and what have we gained? A group out of New York with their hands out to us, not the Wynn. We have got it pretty good and we are going to get our tips back, we won, if we don’t shoot ourselves in foot ...and vote this union in. Do not vote for the union for the wrong reason, to get back at Steve Wynn, or because it is the popular thing to do. Steve Wynn screwed up, don’t repeat his mistake. Vote NO
